Amazon’s 3G Kindle Bypasses “Great Firewall of China”

2 Nov 2010

China bloggers and techies take note: The Amazon Kindle 3G model automatically bypasses mainland China’s Internet censoring system, also known as the “Great Firewall of China,” without the need for a proxy!

Though Amazon currently does not ship the e-reader to China or offer local content, the product has been “popular on internet auction sites and other underground sales outlets” because blocked sites such as Facebook and Twitter are apparently browsable on the Kindle’s experimental Internet function, reports the South China Morning Post. Kindle uses its own network, called Amazon Whispernet, for wireless coverage using partner 3G data networks outside of the United States.

Now there’s a potential side-career for rebellious democracy activists: Kindle bootlegging.
