The China BOOM Project poses one question to 100 China experts: “Why did China boom?” Below, hear journalist Michael Anti discuss the 1989 Tiananmen Square Incident’s effect on the nation’s development:

Produced by the Asia Society, the initiative has received a wide array of answers in video and essay form, all of which touch upon several themes: capitalism, globalization, the Communist Party, and crisis management. The site also divides the answers into the various time periods experts pinpointed as the turning point of China’s development: “Inheritance” (pre-1978), “Emancipation” (1978-84), “Reckoning” (1985-89), “Rebirth” (1990s), “Overdrive” (2000s), and “Prospects.” Some very provoking and thoughtful answers.
