Spanking in Singapore: Fetish or Deterrence?

21 Oct 2010

Kamari Kenyada Charlton may be spanked. The American/Bahamian businessman is currently awaiting a decision from the Singapore High Court on whether he will receive the mandatory three strokes of the cane for overstaying his tourist visa by 194 days.

Charlton’s lawyer argues that not commuting the sentence to a fine is discrimination. The American Embassy, in contrast to good ol’ Singaporean paternalism, has taken the position of tough love.

If Mr. Charlton is sentenced to the caning, it will end the 16 year drought since an American last received the infamous corporal punishment in Singapore.

An ancient and ridiculous practice? Or do criminals just need a good whack from time to time?
