The End of Something: Voxtrot Break Up

22 Apr 2010

Earlier today, Ramesh Srivastava, the frontman of Austin-based indie pop quartet Voxtrot, announced on his blog that the band will be throwing in the towel by the end of June. The news comes as a shock — a somewhat unceremonious end to a highly underappreciated band that was never really able to get off the ground. However, the way Ramesh puts it, the members of the band are moving on heads held high, regretting nothing, and looking forward to new creative heights:

The career path of Voxtrot was truly one of long, simmering build, explosion, and almost instantaneous decay. Slowly, I am learning to replace any feelings of regret with positive memories of how amazing the whole thing was, and how it has, in an unexpected way, fortified my character.

Mitch Calvert (guitar) is moving on to play with jangle pop band International Waters. Jared Van Fleet (guitar/keyboard), who left Voxtrot last spring, continues to produce solo work under the moniker Sparrow House. Matt Simon (drums) and Jason Chronis (bass), ever inseparable, are playing in three different bands together, most notably JC and Co. And I won’t be surprised if we hear some amazing work from Ramesh in the near future.

Voxtrot is survived by several EPs, singles, and their eponymous debut album (if you’re interested, check out their 8-part making-of documentary, Reaching for the Lasers). The group’s swan song will take the form of a final farewell tour — aptly entitled the “Goodbye Cruel World… Tour“. If you’re going to be in the U.S. in the next two months, be sure to catch Voxtrot live in concert one last time at one of the following venues:

MAY 21 – Chicago, IL @ Lincoln Hall
MAY 22 – Appleton, WI @ Lawrence University
MAY 27 – Los Angeles, CA @ Echoplex
MAY 29 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
JUNE 3 – Austin, TX @ Emo’s
JUNE 23 – Washington, DC @ Black Cat
JUNE 26 – New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom

“Part of doing something with love,” writes Ramesh, “is being able to say goodbye at the right time. Thank you for everything. On to the next one…”
