Cue the Silent Clock: 24 Canceled

26 Mar 2010

It’s official: after eight seasons of production, Jack Bauer badassery vehicle 24 has officially been canceled and will wrap up for good this May. In light of poor ratings, FOX has pulled the plug and decided not to renew the show for a ninth season, intended to be the grand finale — a sudden and tragic end for the series. As reported by /Film, series director/producer Jon Cassar made the announcement via Twitter earlier today:

News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching

Having watched the show from seasons 1-6, the news came as a crushing blow to me. Granted, I hadn’t touched the TV movie Redemption nor the two latest seasons out of “Bauer fatigue”, but I still have fond memories of 24-hour 24 marathons with the fam. Here we were thinking that Jack Bauer was invincible, but it seems like not even he can stand up to poor show ratings. Over the past year, the show has lost 10% of its viewership. One /Film commenter expressed his relief, illustrating the scenario as such:

I for one am glad to see it canceled. I’m still watching only out of blind loyalty to what used to be one of my favorite shows. In this way it’s like my dog died of old age in his sleep, rather than me having to take him to the vet to have him put down…

For those who feel otherwise, do not fret: MSNBC reports that the 24 saga is not quite over yet — Kiefer Sutherland is slated to star in a 24 feature film “still in the preliminary stages”. Reportedly, the film will take place in Europe as Bauer takes on the world (I could totally imagine a Taken-esque plot). The script will be penned by Billy Ray, who was the writer-director for the political drama Shattered Glass in 2003 and spy thriller Breach in 2007. We’ll have to wait and see how Ray will be able to translate the unique real-time nature of the TV show into a 2-hour movie.

24 canceled — crime against humanity, or was it about damn time? Make your comments known!

I guess I’m a little late to the ball game. Getting all 8 season for some intense 24 this summer.
