Audio Exclusive: Listen to MGMT’s New Album “Congratulations”

21 Mar 2010

In what appears to be a move to combat album leaks, the psychedelic hoodlum duo MGMT has made available for full streaming their upcoming album Congratulations, set for release on April 13, 2010.

“We wanted to offer it as a free download,” the band writes on their site, “but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.” I think to most of us listeners, a free download makes sense just fine, so my  conclusion is that “anyone” can only refer to the suits that latch onto MGMT like wet leeches.

Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, who first formed MGMT in their student days at Wesleyan University, are joined on the album by Spacemen 3 ex-member Pete Kember’s production and Royal Trux singer Jennifer Herrema’s vocals.

The album appears to shun the “single” appeal of certain songs (“Kids,” “Time to Pretend”) from Oracular Spectacular (2007) and instead dives deeper into a holistic sonic landscape of echoing interiority. The first song, “It’s Working, catchily establishes the bombastic aspirations which bleed into the rest of the album, mixed in also with some real vibrating psychedelic exercises. Other tracks I particularly enjoyed include the aquatic, slowly explosive “Someone’s Missing” and the wordless, mesmerizing “Lady Dada’s Nightmare” (complete with cinematic string accompaniment and background screams).

Be warned — it is absolutely not the same immediate, accessible pop buzz that we found so intoxicating in Oracular Spectacular. But if you give Congratulations an attentive and open listen, it’s bound to be a real treat.

Stream Congratulations in its entirety here.

Rating: 4/5

In the meantime, also check out Jonsi of Sigur Ros covering MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” on BBC Radio. Beautiful — anything his voice brushes automatically becomes divinely profound.
