Artist Spotlight: Styrofoam Coffee Cup Designer Boy Obsolete

31-year old illustrator Cheeming Boey is a coffee cup artist. That stained cylinder of foam you throw away, he embellishes. His first piece of cup art came from Irvine trash can in 2006, when he found himself without paper to doodle on at a small cafe.

A sharpie and a styrofoam cup later, he was good to go.

The Malaysian-born, Newport Beach-based artist began to display his work at the Laguna Beach Art Walk, where each cup began to sell for $120 to $220.

The cups are ecologically unfriendly objects that are then converted into admirable art pieces that can be saved. I like his idea. The work is fantastic and surprisingly detailed, channeling the styles of Japanese woodblock prints, Seurat-esque pointilism and cutesy Hong Kong comics:
