Switzerland Bans Construction of Mosque Towers

29 Nov 2009

Following a vote in Switzerland, the controversial ban on the construction of minarets has been approved by a 58% majority. As a perceptive reader on reddit writes, “Get ready for an international shit storm.”

For the ignoramuses all around the world, the minaret is one of the most badass architectural elements to ever exist. Derived from the Arabic word manāra (lighthouse), they’re the incredibly baller crowned towers that flank Islamic mosques. Let me provide you with a few examples of genius human engineering and artistry:

And now, under the pretense of “[outlawing] the political symbol” of “intolerant” Islam, they’ve managed to 1) ban the construction of beautiful architecture, and 2) introduce blatant prejudice into Swiss law. Swiss Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, who was strongly against the ban, called it an “intiative” for a “proxy war,” but I’d say it’s even more overt of a declaration than that. It’s all thanks to the rightwing and ultra-conservative fearmongers, who apparently showed up in droves to vote this ridiculous law into effect.

Because of the dumbly named “anti-minaret initiative,” we will now have to see–instead of awesome, iconic minarets–stupid, large glass penises like this:

This is exactly the sort of thing that creates and provokes extremism in the first place. This law needs to be reversed immediately. Ladies and gentlemen, MOBILIZE!

Mmm yes, I’ve seen that tower while out and about in London. I thought it looked like a giant suppository.
