Colonel Sweeto! Nicholas Gurewitch and the Art of the Perry Bible Fellowship

23 Jun 2009

This is the best purchase I’ve made in a while. Nicholas Gurewitch’s The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories is a collection of some of the best Perry Bible Fellowship strips I’ve read, and to see it on paper, in print, is just straight up great. In the book, you’ll also find some of his “Lost Strips” — ones that didn’t happen to make it, for various (and often offensive) reasons.

(read more about PBF after the jump)

I can’t even begin to describe PBF’s genius humor: a mix of morbid black comedy, absurdism, existential musing, and plain offensiveness, often delivered in this hilarious elevated, lofty tone. His art is chameleonic, his style altered to best serve the comic strip that day.

Sadly, Gurewitch has closed shop since 2008. Since then, he’s been compiling faux Wes Anderson soundtracks and working on a film; considering the ingenuity he put into PBF, what’s next should be sick as well.
